The good die young – das trifft leider auch auf Prince zu: mit nur 57 Jahren vertarb Prince am 21. April 2016. Let’s Go Crazy kommt – wenig überraschend – recht rockig daher.
Der Text allerdings überrascht dafür umso mehr: Der Text fordert uns auf, der christlichen Ethik zu folgen. „The elevator“ ist ein Synonym für den Teufel, „The Afterworld“ das Leben nach dem Tod.

„As I wrote it, “Let’s Go Crazy” was about God and the de-elevation of sin. But the problem was that religion as a subject is taboo in pop music. People think that the records they release have got to be hip, but what I need to do is to tell the truth.“

Diesmal von einer Künstlerin, die durchaus anders hätte sein können, wenn sie die Musik gemacht hätte, die man von ihr erwartet hatte. Statt als zwei Joan Baez oder Janis Joplin hat sie jedoch die Musik gemacht, die Texte geschrieben, so wie sie es wollte: Einfach aus ihrer Sicht, nicht moralinsauer, nicht mit erhobenenem Zeigefinger. Einfach das, das was sie bewegt. Und mit ihrer besonderen Stimme hat sie viele bewegt.
Dabei ist 1969 dieses schöne, motivierende Lied entstanden:
